McAfee Knob | Catawba, VA

This year for New Year’s Eve I went hiking and stayed in a cabin with some friends in Virginia. Chase and I traveled with another couple to Shawsville, Virginia and we had planned to go hiking at McAfee Knob. We wanted a weekend where we could unplug (no internet or cell reception at the cabin!) for the New Year to have time to reflect on 2016 and prepare for 2017. The cabin in Shawsville was an AirBnB and it was exactly what we wanted! McAfee Knob was a little less than an hour from Shawsville and is a part of the Appalachian Trail. The hike we did was about 8 miles, and it took us a little over two hours to go up and a little less than two hours to come back.

The only bad part about the trip was that I had a cold. I started to develop a cold on Christmas and it continued to get worse throughout last week. I felt pretty winded in the first part of our hike because it was really steep and I was having problems breathing at a normal elevation. It felt good to get to the top of McAfee Knob because I felt like I accomplished something. We discussed making it a tradition to go hiking on NYE as a foursome (we spent last NYE together, too, but we hung out at my house). It’s definitely not the conventional NYE celebration, but I enjoyed it and would definitely do it again! We didn’t even stay up until midnight because of how exhausted we all were at the end of the day.

What did you do to ring in 2017? Have a great weekend!
